Dr. Zainab Alwani is an Islamic scholar and Associate Professor of Islamic Studies at the Howard University School of Divinity, where she was the first Muslim professor. She holds a PhD in Islamic jurisprudence, serves as Vice-Chairman of the Fiqh Council of North America — the first woman to hold that role — and is a founding member of scholarly initiatives on Qur'anic studies and family jurisprudence. Daughter of the renowned jurist Dr. Taha Jabir al-Alwani, her research focuses on the Qur'anic concept of intra-textuality (al-wahda al-bina'iyya), Muslim family law, and women's scholarship.
