About this lecture

In this powerful lecture, Imam Siraj Wahhaj addresses the challenges facing inner-city Muslim communities in America, drawing on Islamic principles of justice, patience, and universal love to inspire action. Through vivid personal stories, historical references, and Quranic wisdom, he calls on Muslims to fight for their rights through lawful means, care for the poor, and embrace their identity as both proud Muslims and engaged American citizens. A must-watch for anyone seeking to understand how Islamic values can transform communities from the inside out.

Imam Siraj Wahhaj is one of the most influential Muslim leaders in American history. Born in Brooklyn in 1950, he embraced Islam in 1969 and received imam training at Umm al-Qura University in Makkah in 1978. He founded Masjid At-Taqwa in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, where his community became nationally famous for leading anti-drug patrols that transformed the neighborhood. In 1991, he became the first Muslim to offer the opening prayer (du'a) before the United States House of Representatives. A former vice president of ISNA and a founding figure of the Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA), he remains one of the most sought-after speakers in the American Muslim community.
