Death & Afterlife Community & Ummah Dunya & Materialism Aqeedah Tawakkul Quran Prayer Purification of the Soul

About this lecture

In this powerful Jumu'ah khutbah, Sheikh Hamza Yusuf explores the spiritual disease of material preoccupation, arguing that the modern obsession with wealth acquisition and recreational escapism has trapped humanity — including many Muslims — in a cycle of anxiety with no real cure. He draws on Quranic verses, Hadith, and insights from Islamic scholarship to explain that true security (*aman*) can only be found through faith (*iman*) and the cultivation of humility before Allah, particularly through the practice of sujood and the frequenting of the masjid. The lecture closes with a urgent call for the Muslim community in America to awaken from its spiritual complacency and think seriously about its institutional future and collective purpose.

Shaykh Hamza Yusuf is one of the most influential Islamic scholars in the Western world. Born Mark Hanson in Washington State in 1958, he embraced Islam in 1977 and spent over a decade studying the traditional Islamic sciences in the UAE, Algeria, Morocco, and Mauritania, most notably under the Mauritanian sage Murabit al-Hajj. He is the co-founder and president of Zaytuna College in Berkeley, California — the first accredited Muslim liberal arts college in the United States — and has translated numerous classical texts, including "The Creed of Imam al-Tahawi" and "Purification of the Heart." His lectures on spirituality, classical scholarship, and the crisis of modernity have shaped a generation of Western Muslims.
