Abdal Hakim Murad - Paradigms of Leadership: Imam Shamil

About this lecture

In this lecture, Abdal Hakim Murad critically examines the modern Muslim fascination with "leadership" as a category, arguing that it imports problematic secular and Enlightenment assumptions into Islamic thought. Drawing on Hadiths from Sahih al-Bukhari and the Quranic contrast between the Mosaic and Pharaonic archetypes, he makes the case that true Islamic authority is thrust upon the reluctant rather than sought by the ambitious. He then illustrates this principle through the dramatic life of Imam Shamil of the Caucasus — the 19th-century Naqshbandi imam who resisted Russian imperial conquest for thirty years — as a paradigm of spiritually grounded, ego-free leadership.
