In this wide-ranging lecture delivered ten years after September 11th, Dr. Tariq Ramadan challenges American Muslims to move beyond defensiveness and victimhood and embrace what he calls "critical loyalty" — a principled, courageous engagement with both their faith and their society. Drawing on Quranic verses, Hadith, and current events from the Arab uprisings to domestic anti-Islam campaigns, Dr. Ramadan calls for a threefold liberation — spiritual, psychological, and intellectual — as the foundation for Muslim civic engagement, social justice work, and meaningful contribution to American life.

Dr. Tariq Ramadan is a Swiss academic, philosopher, and writer, and one of the most prominent — and debated — Muslim intellectuals in Europe. A grandson of Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna, he earned degrees in philosophy and French literature and a PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Geneva, with classical training at Al-Azhar. He served as Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at Oxford University and authored influential works including "Western Muslims and the Future of Islam." His career has been marked by both wide influence on European Muslim identity and significant legal controversy in recent years.
