Siraj WahhajImam Siraj Wahhaj is one of the most influential Muslim leaders in American history. Born in Brooklyn in 1950, he embraced Islam in 1969 and received imam training at Umm al-Qura University in Makkah in 1978. He founded Masjid At-Taqwa in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, where his community became nationally famous for leading anti-drug patrols that transformed the neighborhood. In 1991, he became the first Muslim to offer the opening prayer (du'a) before the United States House of Representatives. A former vice president of ISNA and a founding figure of the Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA), he remains one of the most sought-after speakers in the American Muslim community.
