Priorities: The Ummah’s Causes or Your Daily Worship?

About this lecture

In this khutbah, Sheikh Omar Suleiman addresses one of the most contentious questions in Muslim discourse today: what should our priorities be as an ummah — personal worship and religious practice, or responding to the crises facing the Muslim world? Drawing on the stories of the People of Musa and Abdullah ibn Umar's encounter with the people of Iraq, he argues that the real problem is not an either/or tension between personal piety and public action, but rather a broken foundation — and that the same ego blocking meaningful prayer is the same ego blocking meaningful sacrifice. Rooted in Quranic analysis of Surah Al-Ma'un and the Hadith on the branches of faith, the lecture calls Muslims to honor both the rights of Allah and the rights of people, without pitting them against each other.
