Islam & Modernity

About this lecture

In this lecture, the speaker draws on Ibn Khaldun's theory of cultural dominance to examine how the Muslim community in America is being gradually assimilated into a secular, liberal culture — much as earlier communities were absorbed into Islam during its historical expansion, and then lost when Muslim political power declined. Through data on apostasy, intermarriage, and shifting attitudes, as well as observations about Muslim conferences, public figures, and youth culture, the speaker argues that the root cause is a deep, decades-long indoctrination through Western education and media that makes Muslims view their own faith as burdensome or irrelevant. The lecture is a call for Muslims to reclaim their identity, their reliance on Allah, and their respect for Islamic knowledge and tradition before the erosion goes further.
