The Repentance That Saved a People

About this lecture

In this lecture, the speaker opens with a powerful story from the time of Prophet Musa (AS) about a man whose sincere, private repentance ended a forty-year drought — illustrating how Allah conceals the sins of those who return to Him in genuine remorse. The lecture then calls the Muslim community to stop blaming external forces and instead look inward, embodying the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah through excellent character, honest dealings, and service to others as the true and most powerful form of da'wah. Drawing on Quranic verses and prophetic hadith, the speaker outlines the foundations of good character — loving for others what you love for yourself, guarding your tongue, and controlling your anger — as the practical path to both personal transformation and collective change.

Shaykh AbdulBary Yahya is known as the most laid back, easy-going instructor in the AlMaghrib line-up. He is often used as the example for patience at its best, and is infamous for his personal funny experiences that he uses wittingly to teach and help you remember an Islamic concept. Born in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, Shaykh Abdulbary immigrated to the U.S. with his family. He grew up in Seattle, WA and began his studies at the Islamic University of Madinah. It was at the University that he befriended Muhammad Alshareef, as they sat next to each other in the first year of their studies. After graduating from Islamic University of Madinah's College of Shariah, AbdulBary Yahya returned to Vietnam and Cambodia and became a teacher and director of the Umm al-Qura Charity Organization in Vietnam. He is currently the Imam of Masjid Jaamiul Muslimeen in Seattle, WA.
